How to sell your family business without losing the legacy
22 July 2026
Across the Gulf, a generation of founders who built companies from nothing in the boom years is reaching retirement — and most have no succession plan. The children have chosen their own paths, the know-how lives in one person’s head, and the business risks either quietly winding down or being sold in a rushed, opaque scramble for a fraction of what a life’s work is worth. It does not have to end that way.
Start earlier than you think you need to
A good sale takes months, not weeks — due diligence, negotiation, and legal work all take time. Owners who start while the business is still performing strongly, rather than after they have mentally checked out, consistently achieve better prices and better buyers. Begin preparing 12 to 24 months before you actually want to step back.
Get your numbers buyer-ready
The single biggest cause of broken deals is financials a buyer cannot trust. Before you go to market, clean up your accounts, separate personal expenses from the business, and be ready to show clear revenue, EBITDA, and owner add-backs for the last three years. Verified financials are what let a serious buyer move quickly and pay full value.
Sell to a steward, not just the highest bid
For most family-business owners, price is not the only thing that matters. What happens to the team, the name, and the customers you spent decades earning matters too. Be explicit about that up front: a buyer who intends to run and grow the business is worth more to your legacy than a marginally higher offer from someone who will strip it. Match on fit, then on price.
Keep it confidential until you choose to share
You do not want staff, customers, or competitors learning the business is for sale before you are ready. A structured process — anonymised listing, gated financials released only to verified, qualified buyers — lets you test the market without exposing yourself. You stay in control of who sees what, and when.
Handing over a business you built is one of the biggest decisions of your working life. Done right, it protects your legacy, rewards your years of work, and gives the next owner something worth carrying forward.
